How to Play Rummy

1

Deal 13 Cards

Each player is dealt 13 cards. One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile. The rest form the draw pile.

2

Draw & Discard

On your turn, draw one card (from draw pile or discard pile) and discard one card to the discard pile.

3

Form Groups

Arrange your cards into Sequences (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit) and Sets (3–4 cards of the same rank, different suits).

4

Must Have 2 Sequences

A valid declaration requires at least 2 sequences — and 1 must be a Pure Sequence (no Joker used).

5

Declare to Win

When all 13 cards form valid groups, discard your last card face-down and declare. Opponents count their ungrouped card points as penalty.

Rummy — The Complete Guide

What is Rummy?

Rummy is India's most widely played skill card game, enjoyed by millions across the country. Played with a standard 52-card deck (plus Jokers), 2–6 players race to be the first to form valid sequences and sets from their 13 cards and declare. Unlike Teen Patti which relies partly on luck, Rummy is a pure skill game — the more you practice, the more consistently you win.

Scoring & Penalty Points

When a player declares, all opponents count the points of their ungrouped (unmelded) cards:

  • A, K, Q, J, 10: 10 points each
  • 2–9: Face value (e.g., 7 = 7 points)
  • Joker: 0 points
  • Maximum penalty: 80 points per hand
  • Full count (wrong declare): 80 points penalty
💡 Pro Tip: Always complete your Pure Sequence first — even before forming sets. Without a Pure Sequence, you cannot declare even if all other cards are grouped.

Rummy Strategy Tips

Strong Rummy players consistently apply these principles: always keep track of which cards opponents are picking from the discard pile (it reveals what they're building), discard high-value cards (A, K, Q, J) early if they're not forming sequences, and use Jokers to complete impure sequences rather than sets — sequences score you wins faster.

❓ FAQ

Rummy — Common Questions

Is a Pure Sequence mandatory in Rummy?+
Yes. A valid declaration in Indian Rummy requires at least one Pure Sequence (3+ consecutive cards of the same suit, without any Joker). Without it, your declaration is invalid and you receive a full 80-point penalty.
How many cards are dealt in Rummy?+
In Indian Rummy (13-Card Rummy), each player is dealt exactly 13 cards. You must arrange all 13 into valid sequences and sets before declaring.
Can a Joker be used in a Pure Sequence?+
No. A Pure Sequence must be formed using only natural cards — no printed Jokers and no wild card Jokers. That's what makes it "pure."
What is the difference between Points, Deals and Pool Rummy?+
Points Rummy is a single-deal fast format. Deals Rummy is played over a fixed number of deals with equal starting chips. Pool Rummy eliminates players when they cross a score threshold (101 or 201 points).
Is Rummy a game of skill or luck?+
Rummy is legally recognised as a game of skill in India by the Supreme Court. While the initial deal involves chance, skilled players consistently outperform novices by reading the discard pile, managing high-point cards, and using Jokers efficiently.
